DISCOVER THE STORY OF STĘPKARSKA 6A
Gdańsk is a city with over a thousand years of history, where life has always been intertwined with land and water trade routes. An extraordinary discovery referring to its past from several centuries ago was made during the construction of the Vantage Rent residential development on Stępkarska Street. In the course of building works, a wreck of an early modern river vessel was uncovered, dated to the beginning of the 17th century.
The discovered remains were identified as those of a flat-bottomed river craft, of the ferry or galar type. It was a vessel simple in form, yet solid and highly practical—perfectly adapted for navigation in the shallow waters and canals surrounding the city.
Analysis of the find indicates that it was primarily used to transport bricks. One hypothesis suggests that they may have come from the demolition of the ruins of the Teutonic castle, which lends the discovery an additional symbolic dimension — the medieval stronghold may quite literally have “floated” to a new location to serve new buildings.
Traces of Everyday Life
The uncovered wreck was made mainly of durable oak wood. Particularly noteworthy is the rare, riveted clinker-built planking of the hull sides, assembled “overlapping,” which testifies to the high level of skill of Gdańsk’s shipwrights of the time.
During the research conducted at the wreck site, artifacts such as a lead weight and fragments of ceramics were also found. These modest objects are traces of the work and lives of the people who helped shape the rhythm of the port city.
VANTAGE RENT STĘPKARSKA 6A
Dendrochronological studies revealed that while most of the timber came from the Gdańsk Pomerania region, some material was transported from distant areas — from Lesser Poland and Silesia to what are now Belarus and Ukraine. This clearly demonstrates the extensive trade connections of historical Gdańsk.
